I got home today, happy for a change. My buddy called, and he wanted to do some fishing before his shoulder surgery next week. We're going to head to a lake with tons of 5-8lb Bowfin in it. Gonna be fun.
I have been so pre-occupied with my lawn lately, I needed the distraction. Didn't happen. As I pulled in the driveway, I get to stare at my neighbor's absolutely STUNNING crop of crabgrass. ![]() (Note: it's the bright green carpet all over her hillside that I have been unable to stop from spreading into my nice dark green bluegrass lawn.) So I am sort of annoyed at this point. While I am muttering to myself, and futilely pulling at some of the weeds, I look up to the west and see this... ![]() Great....more rain for my grass. I'm actually cheered up by this. So I go into my backyard to see how much worse the crabgrass is than I thought....and all hell breaks loose. I took this nice picture of the first shingle to blow off my house. ![]() I made a swift retreat into my house, because I could hear my parrot yelling about the thunder and lightning. After it was over, I went outside to assess the damage. I think the only words that can capture what I felt at that moment were "!$^@#%^@!$^@$%&@#$" ![]() Remember I said I Mother Nature was cruel? I guess I should have kept my big, fat mouth shut. Oh well, I guess I am glad I have home insurance, but the deductible is going to eat very heavily into my "remainder of 2010" tackle fund. ![]()

Hate when that happens nofear. Happened to me and the Ins. co. told me they would cancel my in surance if I didn 't get the roof replaced.
Half my lawn is dying but the crab grass and other assorted weeds are thriving. My neighbor lets this viny weed go and no matter how hard I try it always invades my lawn.

Well that sucks bryce. At least you can take solace int he fact that none of those trees decided to fall on the house.

What we do down here is create a 6" "dead zone" between yards with round-up.

I agree, you can create a no mans land that will keep the crab grass from spreading. 3 rows of barbed wire and a couple pill boxes with .50 machine guns pointed at your neighbors house should do nicely.

The worst part is, she is a really nice old lady. Really nice. She even pays a lawn service to cut and trim her lawn. I just wish they would spray for weeds. She had one particularly nasty weed that I told her I would spray for myself, and she was cool with that. I just can't afford to do a whole lawn prevention program for her.
Oh well, the insurance company's contractor came out and straightened out my shingles to at least be rain-tight until they can get someone out to repair everything. Bad thing is...I find out my shingles have been discontinued. so now I am sure I'm going to be fighting the insurance company to replace the whole roof....as I am not going to have some sort of FrankenRoof, ghetto shanty thing going on.

Thats a tough deal with your house Bryce. Nothing like Mother Nature taking a swipe at ya! As for the crab grass, you can give it to me for my back yard. I'll take anything back there the way the two dogs tear up the back yard!

Indiana, though it voted blue last election, is still pretty free. We have lots of lawn services that will spray everything you want up here.
However, I may try something different next year. I overseeded this Spring, so I was sort of in a sling about pre-emergent herbicides. I'm going to overseed again this fall, but not in the spring, so I'm going to be able to try some corn gluten meal, which is supposedly very good for preventing all kind of annual weeds. Then I'll just spot hit any bad weeds I can't get rid of by pulling, and I should be down to pretty much a pure bluegrass/tall fescue lawn. A guy can hope, anyway.
