???
So yes, I am quite new at this. My husband has become fascinated with fishing, and am the information gathering wifey. I also like it, but I like to research before jumping into things. A few questions. We are in NC, and the waters are already quite warm here. Well, at least in the small creek/pond where we've been fishing. The weather has been in the 80's all week. Here are my questions and I will say I'm sorry for asking all this before I begin... 1> Everyone keeps telling us to fish at sunrise and sunset. But, it's cold out there then! At least a 20-25 degree temp drop. For bass fishing, would it be better to fish at noon-ish when the waters are warmest? 2>Bait- we've been using bloodworms, minnows, and other types of live bait. What's best? 3>Creek- Where we fish is a small creek that feeds into a larger river. The creek is a dark, murky, greenish brown, but we've had quite a few bites. However, we lost lots of hooks in trees and scrub at first. This area is quite beautiful, has lovely fallen willows and other trees on the banks, and I can actually see the fish moving. Is this a good place, as per usual? We've not really fishing it but once and it was at night. We caught three small bass and got several other bites.. 4> Lastly, thank you all for your help in advance ![]() ![]() |

I will see what I can do to answer these for you.
First, fishing morning and evening. The water temperature doesn't change as much or as rapidly as does the air temperature, and it is water temp that is important to fish. Morning and evening are natural feeding times, but you can catch some fish any time of day. Most of us here do not use live bait. Any of the ones you have been using should work though. Want some bigger fish? Catch a perch or bream and use it for bait. The creek sounds like a good place to fish. If you keep getting hung up, try using plastic worms, Texas rigged. I know you need to know what that is, and we can get to that if you decide to use artificial baits. And using live bait, throw it out and let it sit. Or move on its own, in the case of minnows. It will be more natural than dragging it around everywhere. Hope that helps. Steve |

Welcome to the forum!
I think Nitro covered it pretty well. Your creek sounds like a nice place to fish. One thing about fishermen-if we aren't out fishing we'd just as soon be talking about it, so feel free to pick our brains. Don't think something is a dumb question-the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked, so ask away. Regarding getting snagged-most of us have the same opinion on that subject: If you don't get hung up once in a while, you aren't fishing where then fish are ![]() Here is a link that has a lof of great info on getting started in bass fishing: http://www.bassresource.com/beginner/beginner.html It can answer a number of questions and will probably generate a lot more! |

the early moring/eveing bite are the best times. wait till it is 100+ than you will know why. which river in nc are you fishing? blood worms are a salt water bait-not to sure they wouild work in fresh water -is this a creek or a canel you are fishing -it does make a differance.-

Speaking of creeks, my creek is probably 30 feet across at the widest part. The deepest it gets, my guess would be about 9'.
I've heard that the bigger the river, the bigger the fish are. Does this mean that there isn't a 7lb or so monster bass lurking out there? I mean, the bass can't just die after they reach a certain size in a smaller body of water, they keep growing wherever they are. Right? seaphantom |

Well, yes and no. Any given body of water can support a limited amount of fish. If you have a one acre stock tank, it might support 50 pounds of bass. It could be 50 one pounders or 5 ten pounders. There will be a limit to the amount or size of fish there. The good news for you is that your creek is an open system. Unlike a tank, the fish can move up and down stream to areas where there is more forage (or less competition for forage). |

Refering to the size , genetics have some to do with it,
a program to find big female bass and have them spawn in big fisheries to be released later is one great way of insuring our kids will have better fish to catch.. I think that tons of huge fish were caught in the 60's and then butchered, and that may have killed some genetic lifelines. Later in the decades to come catch and release is the norm, but I can remember the old guys wouldn't hear of it.. |
