Saved a life yesterday
Yesterday, at lunch a co-worker started to choke on a piece of steak. Another co-worker reached him before I could. The man choking is a larger man and the other man who tried to dislodge the meat is a smaller man. He couldn't get his arms around the choking man. I took his place and did the Heimlich and dislodged the piece of meat on the second thrust. I used to be an EMT years ago and that was the first time I ever used the Heimlich maneuver. I strongly recommend learning this procedure and other basic life saving practices. You never know when you might need to use it on someone.

Congrats Bob....thats awesome and gotta be a great feeling to know you saved a life.
I've been taught several lifesaving procedures over the years, but I've never had to use any of them and sometimes wonder if I shouldn't get some sort of refresher course on the subject......Might not be a bad idea for alot of us to do that huh?

Nice going Bob! I'm glad you were at the right place at the right time. Were there other people around or just the 3 of you?

I saw my dad save my grandpas life in the same manner. We were camping at Stockton Lake and my grandparents came up to spend the day with us. My dad was making breakfast and we were all sitting around eating. My grandpa got choked and went unconsious in seconds (I assume that he went out cold so fast because he had half a lung removed several years ago and there was an even bigger lack of oxygen??). Anyways dad did the heimlich on my grandpa and it took several jerks because my grandpa was sitting in a big lawnchair and he is a good sized old boy (not fat, just farm kid type of big) and dad isn't what you would call a big dude so he was having trouble getting his arms all the way around him. After what seemed like hours my grandpa came too enough to whisper that he was ok and everyone else started breathing again too. It was the single most scary thing I have ever seen in my life. It was amazing how fast his face started changing colors, I honestly thought we had lost him.
Congrats to you Bob, it's easy for someone to freeze in a situation like that. It's also a good idea to learn how to do the heimlich on yourself as well in case you get choked and nobody is around. |

Thanks guys. Jrob there were about 8 people in the lunch room at the time. Carolina-rig glad your dad saved you gramps. Also you are very right about saving your own life with the Hemlich. It might be hard to believe but I had to do it on myself. Again, it was a piece of steak that caused the choking. I was home alone and threw myself down and against the back of a loveseat that seperated the living room from the dining room. The piece-of steak popped out. Training was again the key to the situation.

WTG Bob! I've always thought classes in such things should be a requirement for graduation in high school myself.
