Jersey hsd a nice heat wave hit today, got up to 80 (its been dismal weather so far) so I hit the water with high hopes. Not once, not twice, not even three times, but four god darn times I felt a hard TUG TUG but when I went to set the hook she let go. I was using brand new gammy wide gaps so I know it wasn't that. Everything was perfectly texas rigged so it wasn't my rigging either. Only thing I could think of is that the fish are still slugish (it hasn't been over 60 for the past 2 weeks) so they're only nipping at the tail end of my baits. In retrospect I probably should have been using a trailer hook with the 7inch spear worms I was throwing. Pre-spawn for us up here in nj/ny isn't for another month/month and a half so I have some waiting to do.... Can't it just be summer yet?

Maybe what your feeling is bluegill grabbing the tail and tugging. What length and action is your rod? Maybe it's not got enough back bone to get the hook set. Just a thought.

7' medium action... And I never really gave the bluegills a thought... That's a good theory.

Yeah my buddy R.J. was having the same problem as you smitty. He was using 7 inch berkley power worms and they kept ripping the tails off. I have had the same thing. I fixed it by waiting a second (literally a second) for them suck up the whole lure before setting the hook, and a slower retrieve. Hope this helps man...
