Default Wake Bait Ring

The wake bait post got me thinking. I don't have much experience with them and am going to try fishing them more this year. Do you guys put an oval split ring on the front, or prefer to tie directly to the nose? Would the oval ring give it a wider swing/wobble during the retrieve?

I prefer to tie the line directly to the nose. In my experience, the nose ring adds weight to the baits and affects the action. I have also had the rings pick up debris that the bait would normally swim through. I do think it would work with bigger baits, but I wouldn't want to do it to one's 4" or less.

I remove the split rings on virtually all my hard baits and use Norman speed clips. Much easier for me to switch lures, as I do that a lot. Even with 3 crankbait rods on the deck, I prefer the speed clips to tieing line directly or to a split ring.
I like the Rick Clunn Lucky Craft wake baits.
