You're off to a good start. You don't realize just how hard it is to take good pictures until you try to do it.

Cool pic of the snake but it definitely isn't a moccasin.

What you reckon it is? Agreed most of the moccasins I've seen are usually dark grey lookin, but I watched him swim around for 30+ mins. He's colored up more like a corn snake but I don't think they like the water.

Banded eastern water snake, quite common, hint pupil of viper is a slit not round.Coloration somewhat depends upon available light and if wet or not. Notice the head shape and skin texture of the real thing.I was a tad bit farther back but he knew I was there and gave a visual warning. Would appear darker if above it looking down versus into the sun. Last edited by lilmule; 12-03-11 at 07:59 PM. |

I would agree with banded water snake. Moccasins have a larger, more angular head and aren't normally so brightly colored, generally pretty drab. They also don't swim underwater like that, they keep their whole body on the surface, not just their head. Lastly, their girth is usually very large in proportion to their length.

Not bad for a start there, stick. It's easier if you find critters that will actually pose for you... |

I have never seen a chipmunk in person. That is a chipmunk isn't it? Do they climb trees like a squirrel or hang on the ground like a rabbit? Can you eat them?

Yep, chipmunk. I'm not a chipmunk expert by any means, but all the ones I have seen are scampering around on the ground, and they like to burrow in the ground. I've never heard of anyone eating one, but I can't say I ever even thought about it before.

Chipmonk also called ground squirrel, cute little thieves that can put an entire ear of corn(kernals) in their mouth, kinda like dual pouches. Wouldnt be much different eating other than smaller than a squirrel or rat with a furry tail in general.Would need several for a snack. Alvin wheres alvin?Theodore? Past a lot of peoples times and gives my age.Alvin and the chipmonks.Oh Simon? |

Great idea BBM After the "chip-at-dale" kabobs yall can enjoy the "cheap-n-dale" floorshow! Just kiddin of course. I would love to go to DH, I remember reading articles about the smallmouth fishery there back in the 80's. Didn't the current or former world record come from there? Sadly chipmunks and SMB share the same pitiful place in my "never seen one" file.

Agreed on the water snake. The only way they'll kill you is by heart attack. Any of you guys who remember my story about the one poking its head out of the rocks next to my hand to get the fish I dropped? OMFG.... Watterboy, that chipmunk picture is great! Some aperture work could have improved the depth of field by blurring the background a little, but its cuteness would make up for just about anything. The glint in its eye is superb. Very nice and sharp too!

Great pics! The only thing to shoot at a chipmunk is a BB gun (or a well placed shot with a compound bow). Not that I would no nothing about that.... Yes, they do climb trees. Never heard of them called "ground squirrels" though. |
