Default Tanner's First Deer

Me and the boys got back in to hunting a little this year. We had one more chance to go before I came back to work. I alternate between the 2 older ones and it was Dylan's (oldest) turn to go, but he deferred. So Tanner and I set out for the short drive to a buddy's food plot. I figured the season was about to come to an end when nothing had showed by 5. But about 5:15 I caught some movement out of the corner of my eye and got Tanner ready. The deer stopped about 15 yards in front of us and I told Tanner to go. I was the guidance system and he was the trigger man. We squared up on him and he squeezed the trigger. The deer never took another step. We were hi-fiving and everything. I was so proud of him. But on the other side, I knew Dylan would be sad because he had choose to stay at home. But hopefully we will get him on 1 next year.

I know he was excited, he will always remember his first. Hopefully you will have a hunting partner for life.

He asked if he could shoot his BB gun today. Flea got it down and went outside with him and he told her he was going to kill some birds to put some more meat in the freezer. I am pretty soft towards kids, it definitely pulled a heart cord to see the little buck fall in his tracks.

We had missed one together on Christmas Eve. He looked at me after I told him I was sorry and said, "It's like you say, that's why we call it huntin', not killin'. Well said Gene, well said." The kid is country as a turnip green.

I am assuming that is his first? Man there is nothing like your first deer. I remember my first one like it was yesterday, it was one of those moments that I will cherish forever. Dad was by my side when I squeezed the trigger and my grandpa was hunting not far from there and came over as soon as he heard the shot. All 3 of us were high fiving and huging like crazy. I have been on the other side of a first deer when I was sitting with Britney when she drilled her first deer. I honestly was more excited for her than I was for myself when I killed my first one. Congrats dad on getting the kids outdoors.
