Me and Adam was pulling our boat across that bridge a few years ago and let me tell you that bridge is narrow and we passed a semi, if I would have farted it would have whistled dixie.

ok guys all joking and fun aside. you don't know how lucky we were to not have anyone hurt or killed. One car stopped 3 feet short of going in the water. My wife and I went to the bridge last night so that she could offer assistance from her boss (he was not in the district). Even in the dark it was unreal. Today, she saw it again (with her boss) and she said that it was nothing like she had ever seen. Millions of dollars are lost every hour that this river is shut down to barge traffic. In this tough times, even a few dollars lost is not good. Ok, I am done now. Sorry for the rant but I couldn't help it.

Captain: "Did you hear something?"
First Mate: "No, did you feel anything?" Captain: "No, anymore beer in the cooler?" And on a serious note, I was on Hatteras Island in October 1990 when a dredge at Oregon Inlet hit the Bonner bridge dropping about 300 feet of the bridge into the inlet during a Nor'Easter. We actually crossed the bridge (around midnight) about 90 minutes before it fell and stopped (on the bridge, to see what was happening) when we saw the ship with a lot of lights on floundering and headed towards the bridge not thinking that it would actually knock a section of it down. We resumed out travel and had just pulled in to Hatteras Village when the lights went out, didn't think much of that either as there was a storm in progress. The next morning we awoke to find two feet of water flooding the main street in the Village. All non-residents had to evacuate the island - by ferry, as the bridge was the only land access. We were "stranded" for four days, no electricity, phone, food & water were in limited supply. It was strange being in a "disaster area" but it really had minimal impact on me and my friends that were there to fish. We spent four days fishing and just could not get back to the mainland until 4 days later. It did take 2 days to get word back home that we were all right as there was no phone service (cell service was not available). The emergency responders had set up a "ham" radio operation at one of the schools where we had to go and give them a short note to relay to our home areas where one of there fellow operators called our homes with that message. Phone & electric were restored three days later and I had to call work and tell them I would be extending my vacation a few days - had a bit of a difficult time convincing them I was really stranded.................. everettvet, do you know if he tried to pass under a lower section of the bridge or was he riding high with no load or something? I would think that these captains should know pretty well which bridges they can go under.

I could be wrong but I think I read where the water level was higher than normal.

It appears that he was out of the main channel and tried to pass through the area that is for recreational boats. The water was at 354 which is normal winter pool. Summer pool is 359. I have heard that this type of ship has passed this area without problem several times before. There is a question if the navigation lights on the bridge was working correctly.

The navigation lights were out,one lane working, scheduled for maintenance due to lack of nav lights, bridge was very narrow built prior to ky lake being formed was raised to enable use of current bridge, built 1930 should have been replaced 40 years ago.
State of kentucky would still be studying widening(lol why not replace it). If you look at it or the one on barkley just as bad concrete does not extend to waterline, they lengthened the steel to raise, and its been underwater for about 80 years. Check the pics out no or little damage to boat, not even the railing flattened, yet steel girders are drooped over the sides they bent called metal fatique. While its an imposition for those who used it it sorely needed replaced, meet another dual wheeled boat and major pucker factor, inches between. Some one ask for a barge to tap the one over barkley and get them both done. I did say tap,as thats all it would take. They both were an accident waiting to happen. |
