When I cleaned up my desk at work last Friday, I took my last can of soda home with me.
I had one of those little foam can cozy things I had gotten at a product rep meeting earlier in the week, so just out of habit, I put the can of soda in it so it wouldn't roll around and bang into stuff. I forgot about it when I got home. ![]() When I got into my truck on Saturday to go watch the UFC fight, of course it was really hot inside. Still not a problem though. The problem arose when I turned the A/C on full blast. Five minutes into my drive, the can exploded. Now when I say exploded, I mean just that. There was a loud boom. The top of the can flew off and hit me in the side, hard enough to hurt. It nearly made me wreck. The entire interior of my beautiful truck, as well as I, was covered in soda. I can only be thankful that it was diet lemonade soda. No sugar, and no dark color. It should clean up pretty well after a couple sessions with my mini wet vac. I figure what happened was purely physics. Leaving it in a hot car wasn't the real problem. The insulated can holder kept the main part of the can hot, but the A/C got the top of the can cold. The resulting temperature difference just tore the top off the can. I knew I should have just stuck to my usual plastic 2-liters. But I can only imagine what an exploding 2-liter bottle would do to the inside of a vehicle. ![]() Perhaps I will never leave anything in there again.

Having one of the old 3-liters explode in the car was an experience. Full sugar and caramel coloring. To make matters worse it did not blow the lid it just exploded. Good times. My daughter had a can explode in her car last week too.

One should always treat explosive devices carefully,my wife leaves them in the car all the time first thing I do is toss them out, pickem up when I get back.
Seems very few people crack a window nowdays. |

![]() ![]() I am glad you were not injured, Bryce, other than getting hit in the side with the can lid. BUT, I bet my sides hurt worse than yours. ![]() ![]() ![]() That's going to be a ROYAL PITA to clean the interior, even without the sugar it most likely will be a bugger getting it all spiffy again. I'm certainly glad to hear you did not have an accident as a result, that could have been UGLY. Last edited by bassboogieman; 07-09-12 at 03:40 PM. |

Hope this makes you feel better. I work for a fire equipment company and we sell and service fire extinguishers amoung many other things. One day we were taking a break sitting in chairs in front of the garage as a pickup truck pulled into the driveway. He came to a screeching hault, slammed the truck in park and rolled out of his truck as the truck filled completely, and then some, with yellow powder. He had the extinguisher sitting on his seat and it fell off the seat landing on the floor, upside down on the valve assembly, with enough gusto, it not only discharged the extinguisher, but bent the pull pin while in place so it would not stop discharging untill it was completely empty! He'll never get all that extra fine powder out of his carpet and upholstry.

Ya know, I'd love to stay I've done that before, but I haven't! How ever if you throw one of these (with the screw top) into a fire, it wont take long to explode. Scared the **** out of us all around the fire. Same thing with porcelain. The air bubbles in there will freaking blow shrapnel everywhere.
I think it would have been lmao funny to see it happen to someone.

My sister had a can of Fix-a-Flat explode in her hatchback and we never got that crap off the window. It blew the cover apart.
But back to the story, sorry Hot Pocket, but I got a chuckle out of it. Glad you weren't injured, other than the pride of a pristine interior. And just think, that .50 can saved you 3.00 for a lemony fresh auto dispenser.

My brother had bought some freon (R134A, really, I guess), thinking he needed to add some to his car's A/C. He didn't need both bottles he'd bought, so he kept one in the car, not thinking to take it out. Well, that sucker popped one day in the parking lot at his work. The top blew, and the can came out the triangle vent glass of his rear door so fast, it didn't shatter the glass, it punched a circular hole in it. Then it bounced off the car next to his, skittered across the asphalt, and ended up underneath a car about 75 yards away. I wish to God I'd seen that.....

No no, Don...I didn't mean the soda itself.
The can separated due to having hot sides and a cold top. The top shrunk until the strain was just too much.
