I am hoping to take a few fishing trips this year. Due to time constraints most of them are going to require airline travel to get there (only USA destinations). Has anyone taken airline travel with fishing poles?

If so how did you do it and what recommendations would you have for me?

I've never done it, but I know a lot of people will ship their rods UPS or FedEx to meet them at their destination. Depending on how many rods you're talking about, a piece of 3" or 4" Schedule 40 PVC with 2 end caps taped on should do the job. Take the reels with you and ship just the rods. Be sure to pad the ends really well so they won't break the tips off.

Get a Bazooka rod tube to fit the number of rods you want to take if you want to take them on the plane. I've flown a few times with rods and haven't had too many problems. Last time they removed the C clip that allows the tube to telescope and lock in place and didn't put it back on the tube. I haven't had any get damaged though, so I can't really complain.

I have a Bazooka rod tube and if you trust your airline to get your baggage to your destination along with you, then I think it would hold up. If you know someone near your destination then I think I'd ship them my rods in a PVC tube as Mippiboy suggested or directly to your hotel or lodge. Shipping may also be cheaper than airline baggage charge.
