Another link and good article. Sounds like classy fisherman to know when to drop the pursuit. Know doubt that if that fish wasn't harmed, there's always the possibility of her being caught again. Maybe not this year......but who knows.

To me that means he probably did catch a 25 pounder, and the media making a a¢¢ of themselves he probably said F it..I would too.
Best thing is his buddies all got to see it happen, a great memory for all of them and especially the angler that caught her. |

Thats nice, I'm glad they came to that decision. Next time if they land a 25 pounder, I hope they take all the measurements and dot every i.
As much as C&R is a good thing, if someone on here catches a 25 pounder....DON'T THROW IT BACK. To beat GW Perry's record we need 100% proof positive, and for such a historical record I believe keeping that 1 fish would be acceptable.

I agree, Tom-what a class group of guys. True sportsmen. A part of me is glad they aren't pursuing the record-the 22-4 record is the Holy Graile of bass fishing and while I'd like to see the record broken I also like to see the current record remain intact.

If the standing record is broken, its broken. It shouldn't be a matter of personal opinion so much that it gets in the way of the facts. I don't think that the IGFA personally wants to see the record broken, so I think its going to stand until someone keeps the record fish, and they're going to make it harder than it needs to be to verify a record. BTW, these guys are a great example of true sportsmen.

So, no one on this thread would have kept the "world record"? To have honor among gentlemen fishermen to let the record go. Hmmm. Just wondering what I would have done.

As I said earlier, classy guys for dropping a record pursuit that probably would've been filled with doubters/naysayers and nonbelievers because of not having it weighed on certified scales. However, I find it hard to believe that anyone would turn down shot at history and not have done what it took to have that fish certified. I just don't understand what they were thinking. I for one wouldn't turn down a shot at a million plus. Skeeter |

Well the thing is
1. The fish was foul-hooked. Even if it was unintentional and legal in tourneys, we can't have the next world record being foul hooked. Its bad form. 2. The dubious nature of the documentation....without the fish, or measurements we'd never know for sure... 3. 25 pounds is considerably larger than the current record. So much so that I wonder if 25 pounds was possible. Does it sound plausible gentlemen, that the 75 year old record is finally beaten by a fish that weighs a full 2 pounds more than what was once thought to be an unbeatable weight? 4. The next world record has to be indisbutable. The world record bass is among the biggest statistical prizes in sports, it can't be attained in any dubious or even half-dubious manner. Again, if I catch a bass that big - your damn right I'm keeping it.

as far as i'm concerned perry's record no longer stands.screw the igfa.the scale could have been certified after the fact per their own rules.i watched the video and it did weigh 25-1.in this day of catch and release they should have given him the record.personally,if i had caught that fish it would no way have gone back in.i do applaud him for what he did but i never would have done it.hopefully he will get her again.

I'm glad they didn't break it. I'd much rather see the record go to a good ole boy from Georgia than to Californians catching trout-fed bass. If it was to be beat, I'd like to see it come out of the south. Those California bass are cheating. (Not that I would object to catching one

Ya have to figure genetics and availabity of forage is going to be a huge factor in someone catching a whale of a bass in california, seconded by florida...their growing periods are virtually all year, plus the strain of genetics is enhanced by bigger bass each year reproducing.

JB I agree w/ that. I firmly believe that the Cali fishery stocking trout is gonna continue to produce monster fish over there. The only thing good about it. They are FLORIDA strain bass. I respect them for what they did, I believe they should have the record. However, I also agree that due to the longevity of the current record, there should be no doubt about it. Sounds like these guys got that lake dialed in, unfortunately every TOM, DICK, and HARRY will be there fishing for the next year.

Regardless, even if not recognized we all now know there is a Largemouth bass bigger than 22-4 swimming in a California lake. I also agree having a record fish that was foul hooked just doesn't seem right. How would I handle it? No clue, but it would sure be something to find out!

Being from California not Cali as some people call it, I have to step in here. Not all lakes here are "stocked" with trout to fee the fish. I just so happened that the lakes the bass were introduced to had trout. Granted some lakes are stocked for the weekend trout fisherman who wants to take there kids or grandpa fishing, so they won't have to drive 5 hours to find a virgin stream to catch native fish. It sounds like some of you guys think the Dept of Fish and Game started the trout planting to raise the biggest bass on the planet. I'm not trying to offend anyone, just defend my state. Just my .02.

I heard that in the office of the United Fruit Co. in Havana,Cuba they had a black bass mounted on the wall that exceeded the George Perry Bass, but it got lost or destroyed when Castro came to power. I think I heard this from Doug Hannon.
