as a rule i don't sight fish for bedding bass..what i'll do just because i like the fun of it is..back off from where i know the bedding area should be and make longer casts.i can't really see the beds, just know the general area.this to me is slightly more sporting than pulling up to a bed and dropping the bait on their heads.
another thing does anybody else do this?...when the bite is tough post spawn.i'll sit over weed beds and look for fry activity, then make a long pitch to them because usually below the fry is a decent bass. i have changed my way of fishing since i decided not to fish tourneys this year.in a tourney i used to move around a lot,now i concentrate of fishing just one type of structure each trip out.i believe i caught more fish doing it this way and not running around. just some randon thoughts. oh yeah...what's your favorite bait?..BE SPECIFIC!...lmao(hic) sure..i'll have another one..lol

I don't enjoy sight fishing either but if I feel that I can win a Tournament by doing it I will do it. It is a bad deal for the backseater though. I know because I have been the backseater.

i love bed fishing, always return the fish asap though. even after finding the fish its often times hard to make them bite. if you see them, they likely see you. and there are times on the beds where they just want touch a thing regardless of presentation, lure, color and won't even push it off with their noses. I enjoy it as I get to watch the bass in his habitat and observe how they respond to different things. its weird because there are times you can throw a 1 oz jig-n-pig right next to the bass and they don't flinch. other times when they aren't on the bed you can throw a 4" fluke weightless and they swim away like a bear just entered the water.

I really like bedfishing. I DO NOT do it during a tourney....Like Dodge and Rodman I play with them until they bite and I get them to the boat andthe immediatly release them. They get all bent outa shape for about 10 seconds. If you watch them the go right back like nothing ever happened. I dont like doing it during a tourney because I am stripping them away from the bed and transplanting them miles away. That is not fair to the fish.
I use alot of different baits for bed fishing. Swimbaits(Matt Lures Baby Bass), White lizards, bright colored senko, Brush hogs and Sweet beavers. I throw on 12-15lb test floro with a tungsten weight. |

Bassenforcer does know, he spent a tournament in the back seat of a bed fisherman, no where to cast and sitting in appx. 3' of clear water.
In the event that you don't even try to bed fish, theres a possibility that if you catch a large female thats shallow, i.e. 3' deep, and the water is above 75 degrees it's a late bedding fish. (This was a statement made by a pro at a bass seminar.)

Bassnman30, more like 1' of water. He had to use a push pole to move the boat.

I love sightfishing cause i like seeing the bass attack the lure...but i dont try to always do it to just catch a fish on a slow day, or because i havent caught one bigger than the one im looking at. cause i see it all the time.

I am going against the grain here, but I love sight fishing! Just knowing that you see the bass, and the bass see's you, and you need a perfect presentation, and maybe 1 or 2 shots at that fish. Ultra clear water also makes it more challenging. At one reservior near me it is claer water, year round, and can see 20-25 ft down, and see the big fish all day. My bait choice is a few select lures. On beds- Rapala Husky Jerk HJ8 in Gold/Silver/Firetiger, just suspended on the bed, Gary Yamamoto Senko in a 4inch version, my colors are basic, green pumpkin, white, black. Finnese jigs, in Green Pumpkin. I use flurocarbon exclussivley for this. My other concern is my boats reflection, so in clearer water, I use my glasses, to see the fish at a distance, and then cast to it.
