Talking Beautiful Boerne Lake 10-15-06

Rebbasser and I launched, in pea soup fog, circa 0645. Fumbled our way, with me on the TM and steering by sheer luck, to the dam. (no gassies can be used on this lake, save in an emergency.)
We caught 10 along the dam, all on softies, then worked our way up the bank. We caught a few more on the grassy flats, most on softies (wacky worms, wacky Tikis, mostly) and Reb got a nice phish on a smokey joe Hot-Spot.
Finally, a topwater bite! I nailed two on a SuperSpook Jr. and Reb got a "fish of the day, mebbe 2.? lbs on a small Spittin' Image TW.
We mosied about and picked up a few more, ending with 13 apiece, all released (But one died...sniff.)
The new Optima batteries Reb installed still had 50% left after 7 hours of battling breeze...not bad!
Water temps have dropped to mid-70s and we are hopeful that the TW bite will go nuts soon.
As usual we had a great time together. We are now in the planning phase for our visit to Choke Canyon Lake "Home of The Gators!" scheduled, weather permittin', for next Saturday.
One of us will report thereon.

That will be all,

F.Rod

We did have a good time. Flyrod did leave out the duck rescue, though. We were on the far side of the lake when this guy in a really beautiful wooden kayak(Ever notice that spells the same from both ends ?) he said he made himself hailed us and ask if we had some line clippers(obviously not a fisherman ). He said he had found a duck all tangled up in mono and wanted to free it. He had picked up the duck and tucked it into the kayak and paddled over to us. He held the duck and fortunately it wasn't tangled up as badly as I feared-the mono was just loosly wrapped around it's feet so I just untangled it and he let it go free. We did our good deed and the moral of my story is don't just throw old mono down or in the lake-take it with you and don't leave it laying around to tangle up the critters we share the water with.

Yep, just NW of Boerne and there are some BIG gators in Choke-last time we saw the bull of the woods. It was 10 feet if it was an inch.

Welllll, I am not sure where Beorne (or it's lake) is, but to get to BOErne (Ber-knee, it's German.) City Lake, take IH10W outta San Antonio, past the two Boerne exits, last one being Hwy 46, then past Johns Road, then exit right on Ranger Creek Road.
At the bottom, turn LEFT UNDER IH10, then take an immediate right, continuing West on the access road (two-way, be careful.) You will pass a highway interchange (stay on the access road here. Don't turn right onto the o'pass.), then a storage facility and, probably a mile (+-) down, you'll see a green sign stating "Boerne City Lake", take that left turn onto Upper Cibolo Creek Road. Follow the road until you arrive at the entrance gate, on the left, to the park and lake. It's probably less than a mile, but easy to miss due to vegetation.
CAUTION. There are usually deer all over the highway, on the Ranger Creek exit, the access road AND Upper Cibolo Creek Road. Use extreme caution.

FR

PS: Reb didn't tell the whole truth...the duck was Deeeeeee-icious!

That little creek (Cibolo) has, on occasion, really produced some surprises.
Apparently the native bass population, prior to the damming that produced Boerne City Lake, had great potential. Circa 1983-4, on a cool, misty afternoon at Boerne City Lake, in either late March or early April, I took the trouble to weigh (and release) ten bass I caught (8 on Topwater, 2 on Black/Blue tail 4" lizards) while fishing from my bellyboat. Total weight, an ounce or two over 48 pounds. Of course, some stocking must have taken place, but my largest bass, close to 7 pounds, must have been a native fish.
Also, in either '82 or '83, I caught a smallmouth that was a shade over 4 pounds. That was a thrill and for a year or two it seemed as though the smallmouth stocking experiment might work. Sadly, they didn't make it. I attribute this to warmer water temps than anticipated and, moreso, to the perhaps unexpected proliferation of hydrilla in the lake. The smallies simply had few places on which to spawn.
Boerne, once a quaint little slice of Deutschland, is now a bedroom community for San Antonio and a tourist/artsy-craftsy enclave. The "auslanders" (outsiders) have pretty much taken over and the main street is a deadly succession of "Shoppes", realtors, upscale restaurants and coffee shops, boutiques, antique and collectible emporia. Of course, the fast food chains AND ^$*#%! WalMart are well established as well.
Dang! Is this REALLY "Progress"?
On the bright side, I DID see, VERY up-close, a nekkid lady sunbathing at the lake one day...but that's another story.

Safety first!
